Events of the Fall Semester, 2009

  • Field trips
October 22nd, for all students: Hershel Zohn Theatre, NMSU campus: The American Southwest Theatre Company, through the Theatre for Young Audience Program, put on a free production of, Tuck Everlasting, for local school children. Teacher David Lither was able to obtain reserved tickets for all of our students.
October 23rd, for older students: Benavidez Community Center, 1045 McClure Rd.: multimedia presentation by Ron Lautenbach, world-class mountaineer, on climbing and also on the cultures of the lands where he and his team have climbed. He also showed the equipment that the team uses. The students were absorbed for the 2-1/2 hours and were complimented by adults in the community for their fine behavior and intelligent questions.
November 2nd, for all students: Mesilla Valley Maze, on Picacho Ave.: a fun and educational field trip, which offered 2 hours of close encounters with agriculture.
  • Other events
December 6th: Barnes & Noble gave us the opportunity to have a book fair, which earned us $264 and gave us much exposure to the community. Students sang in Chinese, parents did face painting, and teachers gave chess and Chinese lessons and read stories.
December 6th and 7th: Four of the older students in grades 2-4 assembled computers from parts, guided by our board member David Gutschick. They learned how the parts all work together and then installed three different operating systems.
December 18th: on the evening of the last day of the semester, parents joined us as the students sang in Chinese, Spanish, and English. They younger students presented what they had learned about ancient Egypt, including some cute jokes. The older students illustrated facts about the solar system. We ended with a potluck supper featuring delicious international dishes.
