English
Three classes a day are devoted to mastering English. Two of the classes are reading, and one is writing. We already know of an exception or two, but we don't expect most kindergartners to be able to read or write, so they start out learning the shapes and sounds (phonics) of letters and letter combinations, and make the usual progression to reading and writing.
Some of the techniques we use to start children reading and writing, or build on their existing skills, include:
- read-alouds
- shared reading
- directed reading
- independent reading
- directed writing
- interactive writing and editing
- independent writing
- oral presentations
